UCC unveils new classrooms
Equipped with the latest technology, newly-built classrooms in the University Community Centre are now available for use.
“We are very pleased and satisfied about the outcome of the project, both completed on time and within budget,” Boris Pertout, project manager of the UCC renovations, said.
He said the project benefited greatly from a “very competent” contractor, who completed the renovations within a tight timeline and confined work area.
The renovations feature 15 new classrooms accommodating a total of 1,150 seats. Eleven out of 15 classrooms contain occupancy of 50 seats each, while the remaining four accommodate 100 – 250 seats with a traditional tiered structure.
Pertout noted the majority of classrooms have been assigned as General University Classroom space and will therefore accommodate most faculties on campus.
“Unfortunately, [Western] has not scheduled many classes into these rooms for the winter term,” Paul Tomlinson, senior manager of the University Students’ Council building services, mentioned. “At this point, it looks like full usage won’t commence until summer, with true usage coming next September.”
Pertout noted although some classrooms have already been put into use starting Monday, the final schedule has yet to be completed.
“All of the classrooms are fully equipped with the latest in audio and visual technology, including multi-screen installations,” Pertout said.
He added lecture podiums have been constructed in large classrooms to accommodate barrier-free teaching. Furthermore, tiered classrooms have been furnished with loose caster chairs instead of fixed seating to allow for better interaction among students.
The project budget totalled $10,000,000 which also included funding for audio and visual equipment, furnishings and permits.
Now that UCC construction is nearing its end, Western is looking towards new projects such as the renovation of the Physics and Astronomy Building.
According to Tomlinson, Western received funding to proceed with the Physics and Astronomy Building renovations. Classes originally scheduled to be held in the building will be moved to the UCC.
Pertout mentioned the UCC renovations, which began late December 2008, are not quite complete and the University is still dealing with deficiencies and other related issues.
