Valentine’s Day is fun and flirty, but predictable
Overlapping stories and huge cast make an engaging chick flick
What do you get when you combine an all-star Hollywood cast, a little comedy and a lot of romance? Another typical chick flick that will please flocks of women and couples on date night.
The film’s title gives the audience an obvious clue about the movie’s premise. Valentine’s Day is a story that follows several people across Los Angeles on the most romantic —or depressing — day of the year.

HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT. Jennifer Garner and Taylor Swift are two of the many A-list actors in the star-studded cast of Valentine’s Day.
The film is broken up into numerous overlapping side stories. The main focus revolves around the role of Reed Bennett (Kutcher), a hopelessly romantic florist. Bennett is the character that ties many of the characters together, and the result is a chain effect plotline, with all the characters connected to one another. The encounters, triumphs and tribulations of these characters on this special day unfold in a somewhat predictable manner.
The highlight of the movie is seeing the long list of A-listers cast to work together on the big screen. Expect to find established actors such as Roberts, Hathaway and Garner team up with newcomers such as Taylor Swift, Emma Roberts and Taylor Lautner. Jamie Foxx — playing a sports newscaster who gets stuck covering fluffy Valentine’s Day stories — gets mixed in with Queen Latifah and George Lopez for a few laughs. Bradley Cooper also acts as some extra eye candy. The question that remains, however, is whether the cast is perfectly balanced or overcrowded.
The on-screen romances are decently portrayed, but fall a bit short in some of the storylines. Performances by Kutcher, Hathaway and Garner stand out, and Roberts’ character’s mysterious storyline is not expected when revealed. Another unexpected surprise comes with the characters of Holden (Cooper) and Sean Jackson (Eric Dane), a famous football player.
Although Swift has a minor role of a ditzy, love-struck high school student, she recorded the single “Today was a Fairytale” for the movie, which is coincidentally played at the time everything begins to turn around for the characters.
Valentine’s Day is a typical romantic comedy that can be described as fun, flirty and cute. The cast is successful at delivering the movie’s intentions to engage the audience for a majority of the film.
