First Nations students visited Western for a day of fun and athletics over Reading Week.
The event, called First Nations Track and Field Day, took place Thursday, Feb. 18 at Thompson Recreation and Athletic Centre. Students from First Nations communities in Grade 7 and 8 participated. Western’s Indigenous Services in co-operation with the men’s and women’s interuniversity track and field teams, hosted the event.
“This event is a bridge between [Western] and the First Nation communities,” Vivian Peters, Indigenous Services co-ordinator, said. She explained it was an occasion for students to have fun visiting and learn about the university.
The event had different sport workshops for students to participate in. It also offered students an introduction to events like high jump, hurdles, shot put, long jump and javelin.
