Chakma pleased with provincial budget
The government’s continued support of post-secondary education has been revealed in the 2010 provincial budget.
The budget, released last Thursday morning, noted post-secondary education as integral to rebuilding the province’s economy and to solidifying Ontario as a place to do business.
Among the goals in the budget was a plan to promote Ontario universities abroad and to create 20,000 new spaces in college and universities for the 2010/2011 academic year.
According to Amit Chakma, Western’s president and vice-chancellor, these goals follow the same path as Western’s future plans.
“One of our goals at Western is to produce global citizens and leaders for generations to come,” Chakma said in a press release. “Having the best and brightest students from around the world coming to Western only enhances this objective.”
Overall, Chakma was pleased with the 2010 budget and felt the McGuinty government had maintained ties with the overall goals of post-secondary education.
“It takes vision and courage to invest in the young people of today when looking towards the future health of Ontario’s economy, especially at a time when the government is facing such fiscal challenges,” he added.
