Michael Franti and Spearhead
The Sound of Sunshine
Capitol Records/Boo Boo Wax
The Sound of Sunshine is a feel-good album with light lyrics. Franti draws on a number of different genres and inspirations to give the songs a bit of flair.
The album is full of happy songs, simple lyrics and a classic acoustic guitar. However, while the album is enjoyable, if you’re looking for a musical escape that will make you think or reflect, it won’t be found here. While Sound of Sunshine is definitely an album you can listen to on a road trip or while at the beach, it doesn’t provide any depth in terms of music or lyrics.
Moreover, the record lacks variety. It’s hard to distinguish some of the songs from each other and the lyrics are a bit too repetitive.
The Sound of Sunshine is good for what it is — a feel-good summertime album meant to put you in a party mood. But if you are looking for more, this is not the album for you.
