Fashion Friday: Charity Ball

January 21, 2011
By

Celebs wore some fantastic outfits at the Golden Globes on Sunday. Why not take cues from Hollywood icons for your Charity Ball fashion? Western’s big gala is next Saturday – so it’s time to lock down the perfect outfit to channel your inner star.

Here are some looks for the ladies:

Go nude

A big look at the Globes this year was pale hues with a touch of shimmer — a nice change from the deep, rich tones we usually expect in the winter. If you’re on the pale side, a nude shade can make you seem bronzed in comparison, or simply compliment your skin a la Glee’s Dianna Agron. If you have a darker complexion, a pale dress will provide a striking contrast. And who says white is just for brides? Some celebs even rocked snow white frocks on the red carpet this year, and it’s a daring look when paired with red lips and luscious hair.

Dare to sparkle
Glitz was fun for New Year’s, and it’s a great look for Charity Ball too. A sparkly dress like Anne Hathaway’s makes a bold statement, especially in a unique hue like gold. Basic black with some sparkle is always a classic choice as well. If you choose to channel Hathaway and wear a dazzling dress, keep your makeup and accessories simple. You’ll sparkle enough without adding shimmery eye shadow or costume jewelry.

Show off your shoulders
Shoulder-baring dresses were a clear trend at the Globes. Let’s face it — strapless dresses never go out of style. To give the “girls” a boost, try a sweetheart neckline – the little dip in the front is flattering for your cleavage. Or, for an even bolder statement, wear a one-shoulder dress. This style was huge at the Globes, with so many celebs – from Glee’s Lea Michele to actress Amy Adams – rocking the one-shoulder look. Amy’s night-blue number is a typical winter shade, but the style keeps it fresh looking.

Three looks for the gentlemen:

Keep it classy
Charity Ball is not the time to wear the ill-fitting suit you’ve had since the end of high school. Would Robert Pattinson do that? Never.

Stay trendy and classy with a slim-fitting, tailored suit – black never goes out of style – and pair it with a crisp white shirt and skinny tie. For that extra dash of class, try a bow tie or even a tuxedo. Brad Pitt pulled it off at the Globes, and it still worked even with Angelina’s intense green frock –showing that a simple, classic look goes with everything.

Add patterns and colour
Men, it’s all in the details – so mix things up with unique accessories and patterns. A patterned vest instead of (or under) a suit jacket can be a smart look. Try a burst of color in a pocket square, or add a tie clip for a bit more pizzazz. Even better, channel Harry Shum Jr. and wear a patterned shirt under a sleek-looking suit. A checkered pattern can be good, but follow Shum’s lead and keep the print small – or it’ll look like you’re wearing a tablecloth.

No tie look
You don’t always have to be classic. Johnny Depp — who always seems to do things differently — walked the red carpet in tuxedo with no tie at all. Sometimes it pays off to try something different and forgo the traditional look.

Charity Ball is happening Saturday, Jan. 29 at the London Convention Centre. Proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Tickets are $25 at InfoSource online at charityball.ca.
