Re: “English a major asset” (Jan. 20, 2011)
To the Editor:
Stop bragging about how important your faculty or your major is relative to other majors.
The truth is every major is important or it wouldn’t exist. And please—you didn’t choose to go into that major because you thought it was more important than other majors. You chose it because you liked it and you were interested in the subject itself. It all comes down to self-interests.
There’s no point in discussing how English helps to develop communications that that the Faculty of Science ignores. Really? Is that really why you went into English instead of science? I doubt it.
Let’s respect every major. Not because it’s important, but because it was interesting to some people and we should respect these people’s interests and choices.

Jane, I think you missed the point of the original article. She wasn’t putting down any other program, but trying to explain how English is still important. A science or business degree is widely accepted as well spent time and money that will lead to a legitimate career whereas most people’s reaction to the news that you’re working to obtain an English or other arts degree is “What are you going to do with that?”
She was just trying to prove the validity of an English degree and the applicable skills that one develops obtaining said degree. And I’m sorry, but there is a point in discussing how English develops communication skills that isn’t emphasized in Science because it shows that the English program does provide its students with clear cut skills that are applicable to many careers. I think it was pretty clear that she was not in any way saying that she chose English over Science because it would enhance her ability to communicate, but that in English you develop skills that aren’t focused on in Science.
I would just like to add that I find it funny that you missed the point of the article. Looks like someone needs to work on their communication skills. May I suggest an English course?
