To the Editor:
Margaret Atwood’s appearance at Alumni Hall on Wednesday January 19th was problematic for many members of the UWO Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club.
It seems her august presence required the hiring of a number of extremely aggressive security personnel, who were stationed at all building entrances. Whoever had hired them was either unaware or neglected to mention that our club rents the wrestling room in the basement of alumni hall for practices on Wednesday evenings. Consequently, a number of our members were quite rudely prevented from entering the building.
I find it extremely ironic that someone of Ms. Atwood’s political persuasions would require an accompanying squadron of brownshirts to provide security. It is also troubling that those responsible for organizing the event couldn’t find the time to investigate if anyone else might be using the building that evening.
Hopefully future events will be organized in a more considerate manner.
