The first annual Style Issue

There are a few Western truths we all know well. Getting campus wireless to work is always a gamble, for example. The Ceeps line on Saturdays is consistently a nightmare. And, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Western students all dress alike.

Right?

There’s the UGG boots and jeggings for girls, and the polos and graphic tees for guys. It’s like a school uniform. Or so we joke.

In reality, we all have our own individual style. Sometimes we show it, sometimes we bury it under our voluminous Canada Goose jackets – but deep down, we’re all learning what clothes make us look and feel good.

That’s where the issue you’re holding comes in. This is the first ever Style Issue and it’s a tribute to all things fashionable — whatever that means to you. It’s an appeal to a higher standard of looking and feeling great — even as exams, assignments and our day-to-day lives wear us down.

We hope this issue helps you see there’s more to shopping than the mall. Local designers like Weezi and vintage stores like Mesh offer unique alternatives to the mass-produced products at chain stores.

Hopefully, you’ll also learn what constitutes timeless style for both men and women — like finding a classic, affordable office blazer for the ladies or a perfectly tailored suit for the gents.

Overall, this issue is about discovering a look you’ll love, even if that means shopping somewhere new or trying on something daring. We’re Western — a school that prides itself on exemplary academics, a world-class business program, a teeming arts faculty and an impeccably dressed student body.

So rock some thrift store threads (pg. 3), splurge on a classic suit (pg. 5), trade in your UGGs for some spring stilettos (pg. 6-7) or dress in drag (pg. 11) – we really don’t care. We just want you to find your personal style and own it.

And look fabulous.
