Fashion Show Season

March 18, 2011

OHM

The OHM Fashion Show, the student-run, high-impact dance and fashion show is returning tonight after months of planning. It will feature clothing from both renowned and up-and-coming designers as well as a variety of dances performed by a team of 43 dancers.

“We have spent about nine months working on this show non-stop so it is really quite something that it’s going to be over,” says Raquel Lengyel, co-director of OHM.

This is the ninth year for OHM and although the show will be full of entertainment, the show’s impact is even greater.

“Ever since [OHM] has started, the money raised has been donated to the Canadian Cancer Society,” Lengyel says. “There are many different organizations out there giving to different charities every single year which is fantastic, but it’s nice to be able to say that every year we continue our relationship with the Canadian Cancer Society and support the cause and research.”

Last year, OHM raised over $13,000 and this year the goal is to raise between $15,000 and $20,000. The team also decided on a theme that represents both the fashion industry and current global issues today, calling it Urban Jungle

“We noticed that in the fashion industry there has been a rise in animal prints like leopard and zebra,” Lengyel explains. “There is also the idea of global warming and saving the environ- ment, so we decided to combine these different ideas that went so well together.”

Audiences can look forward to collections from Mark Aguilar, Jenifer Grossi, Faith Patrick, and Lengyel herself who is doing a bathing suit line. Erin Kleinberg’s designs, which have been featured in Teen Vogue, ELLE, and Nylon, will also be re- turning this year.

CAISA

It’s back and it’s bigger and better than ever before. The Canadian Asian International Students’ Association will be hosting its 13th annual charity fashion show – Allure – this Saturday at Centennial Hall. The student-run event has set a target to raise $20,000 for the Children’s Health Foundation.

Along with clothes from chain stores, Allure will also feature outfits by four London and Toronto-based designers: Monica Mei, Carmina de Young, Amanda Wu and Dawn Rawson. “[Each designer] puts their own personality and creative design into it,” says Daisy Sun, the show’s executive director.

The show will also feature performances by Eric Mercer, Brian Barber, and past Western Idol winner Victoria Falana among several other singers and dancers. Allure’s producers have made changes to make the show even more unique and entertaining.*

“This year’s show is more dance and performance intensive,” Sharonrose Deshmukh, CAISA’s model manager, says. “We’ve countered every mistake we made last year.”
