Re: ”New mail system is misdirected” (March 17, 2011)
To the Editor:
Your editorial caught my attention, first because I’m a proud alumnus of Western, and secondly because I’m a volunteer Director of the Western Alumni Association — and a past editor-in-chief of the Gazette back in the Dark Ages.
The introduction of Gmail accounts for alumni will be a vital communication tool that is long overdue. Ivey has had an email for life for its grads for some time.
Today we keep in touch with thousands of alumni by email for many purposes including announcing functions and events of interest to alumni in various parts of the world, and linking them with providers of various insurance and other products at group rates.
We use our existing email account to keep alumni current with news from Western — such as details of Homecoming — and to keep contact with one another. The new Gmail link will help us improve communications to more alumni, providing information that alumni have made clear they wish to have.
So I think there are good “upsides” to the initiative.
