Campus buildings got a cleanup this year thanks to Physical Plant.
Since June, Physical Plant’s Furniture & Equipment Recycling Program has been operating free of charge – meaning buildings across campus were able to get rid of excess furniture left in hallways and classrooms at no cost.
According to Brandon Watson, Physical Plant’s communications and trainings officer, a build-up of furniture in campus buildings caused both aesthetic issues and a safety hazard.
“Imagine try to exit for fire drills,” he said in reference to unneeded furniture being stored in hallways. “We’re trying to make it a safe passage.”
Over 500 items were collected since the program began, with the intention to reuse or recycle everything. Over half the items were redistributed back into the campus community, and the rest will be donated or recycled.
The free FERP program was intended to only run throughout summer 2010, but high demand led Physical Plant to keep it going through the school year.
FERP becomes a billable service again today.
