Try Wortley Village for a change of pace

September 12, 2011
By

Wortley Village is a place little known to the majority of students at UWO. It does not have a direct bus route from UWO, or even a route that passes through it for that matter. Despite how hard it may be to get to compared to downtown, it’s a place worth visiting, if only to better understand the City of London.

Situated just south of the Thames River, Wortley Village is a great place to get out of the ‘bubble’ that Western students are known to inhabit. Whether it’s a weighty exam that has got you down, or simply a beautiful day, Wortley Village is a great change of pace.

Tired of that grocery store bread and frustrated that Angelo’s is shutdown?  Go to the Village Harvest for some freshly baked bread and hop by the Village Tail to play with the kittens that run around the store while you’re at it. Tired of the bustle of downtown? Stop by the Old South Village Pub or Wortley Roadhouse and grab a pint, go to Relish for some gourmet burgers, or check out any one of the cafes in the area.

Getting there is easy enough, just take a bus downtown and transfer onto the 4A or 4B, get off when it turns onto Ridout Street and walk a couple blocks west. The village is on Wortley Road. Or if you prefer to bike, Wortley Road is connected to the bike path that goes through Gibbons Park, just across from campus.

On Sunday, Wortley Village held the Car Free Festival that showcased local artwork and music. Here are some photos of the area and events.

So glad you profiled this part of London’s ‘Old South’. It is a wonderful break from the ‘Western Bubble’. Black Walnut is a great little cafe too! Such a nice, warm neighbourhood…

I have lived in Wortley during my entire undergrad at UWO and I absolutely love it! I would rather live in a village within the heart of the city because then you’re getting the best of both worlds! I have ridden my bike to school many times from there, taken the bus (just a 5 minute walk to Riverside/Wharncliffe and that is a direct route to UWO!)and walked and it really is convenient. Love Wortley! Thanks for this article :)
