Having played two games in the span of a week, many Mustangs football players were given the opportunity to shine. Scoring a total of 134 points in two games, it seemed as though the Mustangs’ offense was in mid-season form—but no star has shined brighter than that of freshman running back Tyler Varga.
Racking up a total of 229 yards rushing in the games against the Waterloo Warriors and McMaster Marauders, Varga was clearly itching for the season to begin. Along with his gaudy yards totals, Varga made a home in the endzone as he crossed the goal line a combined seven times.
He turned many heads during his highlight reel runs Many freshmen fight hard to get on the field and accumulate those totals in a season, but Varga’s two-game stat explosion has the Mustangs dreaming big in hopes of defending their Yates Cup championship.
Recruited out of Cameron Heights High School in Kitchener, Ontario, expectations were high for Varga. After turning down offers from schools south of the border, Varga’s decision to don the purple and white had fans buzzing, and after two games, he has certainly met and surpassed expectations.
As the Mustangs steel themselves to face the University of Ottawa Gee Gees and Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks, they will be looking for more of the same from the talented rookie. Expect to see an increase in workload leading to increased production as the season wears on for the inexperienced Varga. If his development continues at this current rate, it should not surprise Mustangs fans if he is honoured with the Purple Pipe a few more times before his promising Mustangs career is over.
