The Western Mustangs took on the St. Mary’s under 19 AA team on Sunday for a thrilling game of ringette.
“We started out a little rough, but settled into our game once we were able to focus on our system of play,” Kerry Box, Mustangs head coach, said. “[We had a] slow start on the defence, [we were] trapped in our own zone for the first part of the first period.”
This did not slow down the Mustangs as they jumped ahead early in the game with a 3-goal lead. St. Mary’s fought back with a goal, but the Mustangs grasped onto their lead with a fourth goal on an empty net.
“Our new team is on a learning curve. With so many new players it is nice to see things coming together and pull off a win at the same time,” Box said.
Strong goaltending led the Mustangs to a win.
“I would say goaltending was the key as the shot percentage was not in our favour this game,” Box explained. “Our goaltending was outstanding with Danielle O’Beirne and Melissa Guiler sharing the duties between the pipes. The defence had to fend off some of the best snipers in the league and of course our goal scorers were on the mark.”
The Mustangs walked away from the game with a 4-2 win.
“This year’s team is the fastest and most powerful team to date since starting in 2006. We have a great group of committed players and nice additions to the bench staff this season,” Box said.
The Mustangs have a 4-7-1 record so far this season and look to improve it when they play the St. Clements under 19 AA team on Sunday at St. Clements Arena at 6:50 p.m.
