Golden opportunity for European DJ

January 20, 2012

Some artists follow trends. They seek out what is the most popular thing to create at that moment and follow suit until it’s no longer “in.” But for Germany’s Thomas Gold, staying on the same path has always been enough, and it’s also given him the opportunity to tour worldwide while gaining national recognition for his music.

“I’ve always been interested in house music. I started listening to music when I was young, like the radio and whatever was on television shows, but I discovered my love for house music very early,” Gold recalls. “It was actually the first special interest I had in music and I loved it from the beginning.”

Even though house music originated in the early 80s, it wasn’t until the 2000s that it became more mainstream. Gold notes that producers and DJs like David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia paved the way for producers like him and have made it possible to gain international success.

“[These artists] opened up the market by mixing house music with commercial and pop elements, so now the masses are really interested in this kind of music,” he explains. “I think that’s the reason why so many DJs and producers include pop vocals or elements of pop in their own music. It’s not just underground anymore—it’s a mix of mainstream and underground and club music and that’s what the people in America seem to love.”

In 2011, Gold had success with his remixes of Lady Gaga’s “Judas” and Adele “Set Fire to the Rain.” But with his new single “Eyes Wide Open,” a collaboration piece with Dirty South set for release on January 23, he is creating new ground for more original material.

“I’m planning on doing a lot of original releases this year because I already have so many track ideas I’ve started and I want to finish and release them,” he says, excitedly. “I’ve been playing [“Eyes Wide Open”] a couple of times already during my sets and the feedback and reactions were always great. There’s nothing better than having an original track you just finished and playing it to the crowd and seeing their live reactions—that’s the final test.”

Gold also assured that he would try to find time to put out more remixes in 2012, but he won’t settle for just any song or artist. Because he’s traveling and has limited amount of time to work on new material, he’s picky—he’d rather do only a few tracks and make sure he’s really connected to the song.

For his current tour, Gold says he’s excited to share new material with fans in North America and is excited to visit Canada again for his shows in London and Toronto.

“The Canada crowd is crazy and I love it,” he laughs. “Fans that come out to the show can expect a bunch of very new and fresh tracks from myself, including “Eyes Wide Open,” and some other new tracks I’m working on at the moment. I also have a couple of edits and mash-ups of course—the set is very fresh now and I can’t wait to play.”

Although the show is already sold out, fans with tickets can see Thomas Gold perform live at Cobra tonight from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. The show is 19+ and the dress is casual.
