A cultural event in the University Community Centre atrium organized by Israel on Campus was interrupted yesterday by a protest condemning Israel.
At 1:30 p.m., a group of approximately 25 people with their mouths covered by duct tape and carried signs into the atrium and stood silently in front of the IOC display, facing the gathering crowd of onlookers. Their signs carried pro-Palestinian slogans such as “Occupy Wall Street, not Palestine” and “You can’t sugar coat apartheid.”
No campus club took credit for organizing the protest, though members of Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights and the Occupy London movement took part.
Soon after the protest began, a group of IOC supporters stood in front of the protestors, waving Israeli flags and singing the Israeli national anthem in Hebrew.
The demonstration lasted for about 45 minutes before the group marched silently through the UCC food court and then dispersed. Though tempers flared on both sides, the protest remained peaceful.
Walid Abudaia, a fourth-year accounting student who took part in the protest, explained the aim of the demonstration was to show “the true face of Israel.”
“The true face of Israel is apartheid. The true face of Israel is occupation,” he said.
Members of IOC denied the claim and said they would not be deterred. “We will continue to be proud supporters of Israel, and proud Western students,” Sara Gurza, president of IOC, said.
Because the protest occurred in the public space of the UCC atrium, it technically was not breaking any rules, Andrew Forgione, president of the University Students’ Council, explained. However, he was frustrated the protestors had not given advance notice to the USC, as the IOC organizers had.
“They can have an entire day in the atrium if they want to protest—we’ll give it to them. It’s just disrespectful to do it on the exact same day that Israel on Campus does it, or any other group does it. And I think that’s a pretty common feeling among all groups on campus.”
Many IOC supporters expressed disappointment the protestors had covered their mouths, viewing the act as a sign that the protestors did not want to talk.
“We would love to engage them in conversation and see what their views are, talk. This is what the peace process is all about—talking,” Aubrey Chapnick, a third-year business student and an organizer of the IOC event, said. “By taping up their mouths, they’re telling us they don’t want to talk. That’s counterproductive.”
Sumbal Sabah, who was moved to participate in the protest after visiting Gaza last summer, explained the lack of dialogue was part of the message. “They say they believe in dialogue, and yet they forgot to include the fact that they occupy Palestinian indigenous land,” she said. “Dialogue can’t happen if they can’t acknowledge the apartheid wall that rips through villages.”
But Jordan Magidson, vice-president campus affairs for IOC, said dialogue was the only way forward. “If you don’t have a dialogue, where’s progress? We want progress on both sides, and I truly believe that the only way to achieve that is through dialogue. There is no other way,” he said.
“The negotiations are going to be left between the politicians in Israel and Palestine to work out solutions. But I think if we can work together and deliver a message that we want peace, we want real peace, that’s something positive.”

Good article, fairly even-handed.
Good to see the annual Israel-Palestine controversy flare up on campus once again – I’m sure that both sides have well-rounded and respectful solutions to the most divisive, complicated, and unending geo-political situation that now exists in the wake of World War II. Surely the signs and the duct-taped mouths are part of that solution…
And under the banner of Occupy? I fail to see the connection between Occupy (based on the economic and financial impropriety that has occurred in the last 3-4 decades) and the Israel-Palestine conflict (based on thousands of years of history often marked by mutual antagonisms between the two sides).
As long as we can all have a discussion I suppose…

To protest at someone’s cultural event is unethical. These are students who are just showing their country’s acheivements and to relate this to occupation is ridiculous.
I believe peace can be acheived but not like this. This is just antagonizing western students even further, intimidating and interrupting another club’s events without declaring themselves as organized by SPHR is just beyond childish.
Rachel Carr says:
Hi Sumbal,
As one of the coordinators of Israel Day, I would like to respectfully address a few of your points.
1) “Well, where was the dialogue when IOC forgot to bring up the fact that the celebration of Israeli Day is actually founded on devastation of millions of Palestinians.”
First of all, I think you are confusing “Israel on Campus UCC Atrium Day” with Israel’s Independence Day, a holiday that takes place in the spring. (If you are actually informed on the history of the conflict, you should probably know when this took place, but that is besides the point.) This event (atrium day) had nothing to do with politics. There are many more aspects to Israel than politics. IOC had every right to proudly display Israel’s great cultural fabric, so that UWO students could see a side of Israel that often goes ignored in the media.
2) “There can not be dialogue when ICO themselves left the Palestinians out of the conversations by omitting them from their celebrations.”
This is a blatant lie. If you had actually read the material that was on display, you would have seen that information about Arab and Palestinian culture was definitely included. It was highlighted (and celebrated) in the music, film, and literature sections. If you did not actually look at our exhibit, you had absolutely no right to stage a protest about it.
3) “They can start by acknowledging that Palestinians exist, have always existed and that Palestinians are a deep part of Israel’s history.”
Ask any member of IOC, and I can guarantee you that they will agree that Palestinians exist and are an important part of Israel’s history. No nation has “always existed”, though… that is just a tad bit hyperbolic.
4) A large part of your post discusses politics, which, once again, is unrelated to Israel Day. Most supporters of Israel will agree that dialogue is important; unfortunately, dialogue via Gazette commenting is very difficult. If you are as genuinely concerned about peace as you say you are, an important step you can take next time you try to engage in dialogue with a supporter of Israel (in person) is trying to listen. By protesting the Israel Day display without actually reading it, I fear that you may be hearing the noises coming out of our mouths, but not listening to what we are really saying.

This. Thank you for pointing out that the OWS movement is not simply about the injustices committed by a few select bankers. It is about a global revolution wherein angry, spoiled, self-entitled do-nothing dillholes can bitch and whine freely. It is about the most hypocritical members of society being allowed to thrust their own personal problems on the backs of the hard working. It is not a singular movement; it is not just about me, and it’s not just about you. It’s about you and a select group of individuals who happen to agree with what you believe. It’s about labeling all those who disagree with you as vile, ignorant scum.
The correlation between the anti-Israel protestors and OWS? They’re mad, they’re ignorant, they’re hypocritical and they want everyone to know it.
For the record, I’m not pro-Palestine or pro-Israel. Both sides have committed despicable atrocities and both are equally at fault for the conflict that exists in that region.
Joel Kadish says:
Rachel: Wonderful post
The only thing I would add is that the problem with dialog between IOC and SPHR is not that IOC does not recognize that Palestinians exists (as you mention). On the contrary lack of dialog between the two sides, on a more international scale, stems from the Palestinian governments refusal to recognize that Israel exists.
Additionally I would like to point out that USC President Andrew Forgione’s claim that, “Because the protest occurred in the public space of the UCC atrium, it technically was not breaking any rules” is factually inaccurate.
The UCC atrium is private property and must be booked through the USC for any event. SPHR and Occupy London violated article 6.02, 6.03 and 6.04 of the University of Western Ontario Building Usage Policy, which states,”Counter-programming and protesting are not allowed on the same day as the programmed event representing the counter-argument or affiliated with the counter-argument. (6.02)” “No individual or group shall post, hang, hand-out or in any other manner, distribute posters, banners, flyers, handbills or any other printed material without prior written approval of the USC. This prohibition applies equally to individuals or groups conducting activities in Designated Areas. (6.03)” and “No individual or group will solicit business, information or engage in any other commercial, social, political or cultural activity in Designated Areas without prior written approval from the USC. (6.04)”
They have a right to say whatever it is they want to say, but there is an appropriate time and place to say it. In my opinion and in the opinion of the Building Usage Policy of the USC, this was neither the time nor the place. I expect that at the very least they receive the punishment that they deserve for their actions, which can be found in section 7.01 of the Building Usage Policy that states, “Violating this Policy will result in the denial of further bookings through USC Reservations for the remainder of the current academic year, with the possibility that bookings in subsequent academic years may be denied, as decided on a case-by-case basis by the USC Board of Directors.”

TOP TEN ‘PALESTINIAN’ LIES…
LIE #1 “Palestinians” want to live in Peace with Israel.
Hamas Covenant: “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it” …”The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him”. Fatah Charter: Article 19: “Armed struggle…will not cease unless the Zionist state is demolished…” Article 12 states the goal as “…the eradication of the Zionist economic, political, military and cultural existence.”
LIE #2 Israel was created because the world felt sorry for the Jews after WWII.
After Centuries of persecution, oppression, pogroms and extermination against the Jews, Israel was established as a Jewish State by the United Nations in 1948. “Jerusalem” appears in the Torah (the Jewish Bible) 823 times but not even once in the Koran. 57 Islamic States, 1 Jewish State.
LIE #3 The Holocaust is an exaggeration.
Go to a library anywhere in the civilized world and research the millions of documents, artefacts, photos and films documented and archived by the Nazis.
LIE #4 Israel Stole land from the “Palestinians”.
Despite exiles, Jews have had a continuous presence in Israel dating back over 3500 years. Muslims invaded Israel in the 7th century. In early 2oth century, Jews purchased land, mostly owned by Turks. Jews created jobs and Arabs from neighbouring countries came there to work. When Israel became a state in 1948, Arab countries invaded Israel with the explicit goal to kill all Jews. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, al-Husseini, told the Arabs to flee Israel, promising them that after the Jews are thrown to the sea, they would come back to rule. The Arabs who did not follow his advice are now Israeli citizens.
LIE #5 Israel is an Apartheid State.
The Security Fence was built as a measure against “Palestinian” suicide bombers. Over a million Israeli Arabs enjoy full citizenship. This is untrue for Jews in any of the surrounding Arab states or territories, making the Arab States into the real apartheid states.
LIE #6 Israel oppresses the “Palestinians”.
“Palestinians” in Israel have full and equal citizenship rights. In contrast,
Jews are not allowed to live in Jordan and Gaza or the future “Palestinian” state.
LIE #7 Israel ethnically cleansed “Palestinians”.
There are over one Million Muslims who live in Israel as full Israeli citizens. In Contrast, approximately 760,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries in 1949-1950. Jews were also expelled from Gaza in 2005 and as a result, Hamas was democratically elected and started a campaign of terror, launching 1,000’s of rockets targeting Israeli civilians.
LIE #8 Israel is a failed democracy.
Israel is a vibrant successful democracy for Jews and for anyone else who lives peacefully within its borders. Israel, by law, guarantees civil, religious, political and social equality to all of its citizens whether they are Muslims, Christians, Druze, or Baha’is. No such tolerance is found in the 57 Islamic States
LIE #9 “Palestinians” are “freedom fighters”.
“Palestinian” Islamists use women and children as their shields or strap them with explosives to turn them into human bombs. “Palestinian” terrorists are no different than the Islamist Doctors who, in the name of their Allah, bombed the Glasgow airport. . (Islamists are adherents of a totalitarian ideology and are attempting to create a global Islamic order that fully applies the Islamic Sharia laws)
LIE #10 Israel, “Little Satan” & America, “Great Satan” want to control the world.
What is the difference between “Man” and “Satan”? A man mourns when innocent people are murdered. Satan celebrates. Only a Satan would dance in celebration after 9/11 as seen in the “Palestinian” streets.

I don’t think the comment voting thing has anything to do with the legitimacy of a post. Just look at any of the articles about the election and you’ll see a huge disparity in the thumbs-up/thumbs-down on certain candidates and topics. Each candidate is just getting their friends to comb the comments and rate them up or down, likely to present some illusion that they’re widely supported/hated. Last year the Gazette was home to a fierce comment rating battle over the Student Refugee Program, with floods of SRP supporters upvoting the pro-SRP comments. It’s dumb that the comments are hidden after 5 negative votes, but it likely just means there are people with too much time on their hands and not enough to do.
Western guy says:
“I have yet to have a conversation with during an IOC booth/even where I was not just yelled at, insulted, and had all of my points and questioned ignored.”
David,
If you’re basing that statement on your participation in the thread of comments, then I will tell you like I told Batool, those commenters were not even Western students so they’re not IOC members. Otherwise, I have a hard time believing you’ve attempted to engage in dialogue with IOC members and have been met by yelling and insults. I have been to almost every table that IOC has set up and I speak on behalf of myself and many others when I say that we always engage in civil and intellectual discussion. We’ve always been open to dialogue. You’re right about the yelling and insults if you refer to us being called “Zionist scum” and “Nazis” at the protest. You’re also right about the yelling if you’re referring to the “very warm” welcome we received from the VP Events of SPHR at the Gaza table not long ago.

You’re contradicting yourself. First you say this wasn’t a protest against IOC. Then you say it’s a protest to remember that Israeli culture is “at the expense of millions of Palestinians”. So you WERE protesting Israeli culture and the event. Don’t say that this wasn’t protesting the IOC event. It isn’t a coincidence that the protest occurred during and right in front of the IOC event.
Your claim is ridiculous.
How exactly is there a correlation between the conflict and Israeli culture and freedoms that Israelis (including Arab-Israeli citizens) enjoy. There isn’t a correlation. Whether there was a conflict or not, there would still be Israeli culture and Israelis would still enjoy freedoms. Palestinians have culture too. Would there still be Palestinian culture regardless of the conflict? Of course!

You make an extremely valid point. I’m not so much concerned that IOC only gets one day instead of a week to celebrate Israel…however, what I am more concerned is with regards to the fact that SPHR is given a week (Israel “Apartheid” Week)to spread their lies and hatred about Israel. It’s not a week of education (as the Palestinian students claim it is), rather, it’s a week of brainwashing the ignorant, and more importantly, sending the wrong impression of Israel by portraying Israel in ways that’s is just simply not (i.e. an Apartheid State). This week is not about freedom of speech. It is a week dedicated to freedom of hatred. Israel is FAR from being an apartheid state – and any person who has been to Israel or is educated on the subject knows this. I have African American friends who are INSULTED by the misuse of the word “aparthied” since they have relatives who in the past experienced REAL apartheid and this topic haunts them on a daily basis.
