Mustangs skate through Warriors in 5-1 win…

February 9, 2012
By

On Friday, February 3 the Western Mustangs men’s ice hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 5-1 at Thompson Arena.

The Mustangs dominated the Warriors and improved to 20-2-3 on the season and are now on top of the Ontario University Athletics west division.

The first period was uneventful for Western as they fell behind 1-0 despite dominating play and out-shooting Waterloo 19-9.

However, the Mustangs didn’t seem phased at all by this early deficit and were able to come back in the second.

“There was no panic,” Adam Mckee, Mustangs forward, said. “We had good chances and we know we are a good team.”

The Mustangs came fighting back in the second when Tyler Peters netted his first of the game when beat the Waterloo goaltender just two minutes into the period. He would later find the back of the net again 10:52 into the period on the power play. The Waterloo goalie would let in two more power-play goals by the emd of the period—this time by Steve Reese and Yashar Farmanara. The Mustangs dominating power play gave them a 4-1 lead by the end of the period.

“We were down 0-1 after the first period but we stuck to our game plan and we did what we had to do,” Pat Powers, Mustangs assistant coach, said.

“We changed power play units and had limited practice and they went out and their talent came through,” he continued.

Not only was Western able to get another goal before the end of the frame, but Mustangs goalie Josh Unice did not let anymore shots by him since the lone Warriors’ goal in the first—giving them the 5-1 win.

“They outplayed us for the large majority of the game,” Brian Bourque, coach for the Waterloo Warriors, said. “Penalties are a momentum killers especially when you play against a team as good as Western.

Not only have the Mustangs already clinched the west division, but they will now look to close out the season on a happy note when they take on UOIT and York to close out the season.
