Students and faculty are combatting increasing textbook prices by turning to technology. eBooks — digital versions of textbooks — are showing a rise in popularity among university campuses, where libraries have been making a larger effort to bring the online texts into their collections.
Among the universities is Western, whose ever-growing e-resources began in the late 1990s when it first started incorporating eBooks into its library system.
“As with many electronic products, we can assess usage through statistics from publishers,” Karen Marshall, Western’s assistant librarian said. “Our users are telling us that they are excited about the eBook revolution and are using them consistently.”
The Canadian Association of University Teachers is demanding university administrators make their finances transparent.
The association is proposing this plan in hopes university budgets and financial information will be open for inspection and analysis.
