the self-important idiots that write for the gazette stun me again with their ignorance. i am curious how many of them live off of osap. i am also curious how many of them question what, exactly, the purpose of higher education is meant to be. i am also curious as to how many of these gazette

Oh, right. Sure. Those less advantaged students from working class backgrounds should just get off their butts and get a part-time job. That's what higher education is all about, right? Learning how to juggle advanced/intensive academic study with a job? Exactly. I'll bet those farmers' kids could really use that kind of a lesson, eh?

    • Rick says:
Indeed. There's plenty of debate-stifling happening elsewhere in our society. PLENTY. We have to protect, uphold, and advance institutions of higher learning as bastions of free speech and expression. Let the debate continue -- and the truth will emerge. Whenever someone opposes free speech and expression, it's nearly always because they have something to hide

I think what Andrew and the 4 other students are doing across our province is really important. They are demonstrating one of the flaws of the OSAP system in a very public way. Too many students are dependent on OSAP, but because of the clawback, can't work to supplement the loan money and are stuck

    Sixteen Things

    1. Don’t be fooled by Gary Bettman’s posturing over the NHL’s involvement in the2014 winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia. The NHL will be there. 2. Bettman, a shrewd negotiator, is well aware of the fact the players want to be at that tournament. And with another session of collective bargaining ... (more)

    Decisions, decisions for Babcock

Starting Roberto Luongo against the Germans Tuesday night and for the rest of the tournament is the easiest decision head coach Mike Babcock has had to make during these Olympic games. Martin Brodeur looked like an amateur playing against the United States Sunday night and was truly outclassed by his ... (more)

    Fourteen Things

Busy week in sports, no? Definitely a whole lot to talk about. I won’t get to everything — how about them Raptors? — since most customers won’t make it through to the end of this if I do. Apparently the kids don’t have the attention spans for my, ... (more)

    Seven things…

    1. I’m not feeling a lot of remorse for Georges Laraque after the Montreal Canadiens told the 13-year NHL veteran to go home and stay there for the rest of the season — a move Laraque called “classless.” Laraque is being grossly overpaid — the Habs signed him to a three-year ... (more)

    McGwire Comes Clean

The Mark McGwire steroid admission has to be the biggest non-news of the new decade. Of course, we all knew McGwire took steroids during his heyday in the late 1990’s when he put up four straight seasons of 50+ home runs and 100+ RBIs. McGwire was always a good hitter, but ... (more)

    So Long Roy Halladay

It’s a bittersweet day in Jays land to say the least. The best pitcher to ever put on a Jays jersey — yes, he’s better than Clemons — has moved on to greener pastures where he’ll have a shot at a world series championship. Certainly Roy Halladay will be missed ... (more)

    Digesting the Yates Cup

There was one hell of a football game played in Kingston on Saturday. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been there to witness it live — and to have been sober during the game so that I can actually remember it. If you haven’t already, check out my game story here. Here’s ... (more)

Blue and white show their true colours

So which Leafs team do you think is the real McCoy? The team that pummeled the Stanley Cup finalist Detroit Red Wings 5-1 Saturday night or the team that was embarrassed Tuesday night on home ice, losing 5-2 against the draft lottery finalist Minnesota Wild? Ya, that’s what I thought. Last week’s ... (more)

OUA shenanigans and a good Toronto team

Here’s a couple thoughts on a pretty busy week in the world of sports. By the way, how dominant was Cliff Lee last night in game one of the World Series? He commanded an incredible mixture of speed, control, and movement to keep Yankees hitters off balance all night long. Beware ... (more)

    Handicapping the World Series

The World Series gets kicked off Wednesday night. Here’s what to look for: Batting Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has used the same lineup in all nine of his team’s postseason games thus far — and why not? The Phillies boast arguably the most balanced lineup in the league. Number one and two ... (more)
