Get Involved

No experience is necessary. At all. Seriously.

The Gazette is made entirely by students. We offer the most comprehensive, real world journalism experience for undergraduate students in Canada. We have one print publishing day a week on Tuesdays, and publish online daily, including weekends.

While we have a team of over 20 editors to keep things running, volunteers produce much of our content. And the best part is, you decide how much you want to contribute. So whether you want to contribute once a semester or every day, we have a place for you.

What can I get involved with at the Gazette?

There are a few ways to begin volunteering for The Gazette:

  1. If there’s a specific section you want to get involved in, you can email one of the editors and ask them about contributing.
    1. News: news@westerngazette.ca
    2. Culture: culture@westergazette.ca
    3. Sports: sports@westerngazette.ca
    4. Photo/Video: multimedia@westerngazette.ca
    5. Graphics: graphics@westerngazette.ca
    6. Copy Editing: danielle@westerngazette.ca
    7. Western TV: connor@westerngazette.ca
  2. If you’re unsure of what section you want to volunteer for, just come up and visit us! We can help direct you to the section that has what you’re interested in. You can also email volunteer@westerngazette.ca and we can help you choose.
  3. If you have a question about getting involved and you can’t find the answer here, email volunteer@westerngazette.ca.

Where are we located?

We’re located on the second floor of the University Community Centre. If you walk up the main stairs from the UCC atrium, turn left at the top and left again through the double doors just past the stairs to the third floor. Take the hallway left around Creative Services and we are the next door on the right. You will pretty much always find someone there no matter what time or day it is because it’s one of the best places to hang out on campus, so don’t be afraid to visit!

How much experience do I need?

None! Nix, nada, zip, zilch. The Gazette is not only a newspaper, but a training ground. We accept any student, no matter what their program or level of experience is, and help them learn the journalism craft. Our team of editors, who are also students, will teach you the basics of how we work and what we look for. Our goal is to help you learn as much as possible and give you valuable experience for both your student life and career afterwards.

What’s the time commitment?

It’s up to you. We’re here every day and have more than enough content to go around, so you can come in whenever you have time to volunteer. No one is going to force you to contribute on a regular basis (although we will love you much more if you do).

Is there opportunity for advancement?

Yes. While the time commitment is up to you, if you choose to contribute regularly, there are many ways you can get a job with us. Editors work every day and are paid honorarium. They are hired in late March for the following year. Front office members are full-time salaried staff, usually recent graduates and they are elected in late February (you can even vote in the elections). If you want to move up, the best way is to contribute — lots. The Gazette values passion first, so the most enthusiastic writers and creators tend to get noticed.

Can I pitch my own content?

Absolutely, but everyone typically starts off being assigned content at first before they pitch ideas to editors. Once you have contributed five times, volunteers become staff and have more freedom to suggest and work on their own content.

Are there any specific skills you’re looking for?

Anyone with a willingness to learn and get involved with journalism. Knowledge of Canadian Press style, those who are familiar with Adobe Creative Suite or Final Cut Pro and those with web knowledge, like HTML and CSS are all assets though.

But do you guys have fun?

Absolutely! Volunteers and editors have regularly scheduled socials to enjoy themselves so whether it's shooting each other at laser tag or shooting a dynamic video — it's bound to be a great time.

How do I sign up to volunteer?
