I believe the monarchy is an important part of both Canadian culture and Canadian history. Sure, it doesn't directly benefit us in any financial way, but is this the only criteria for measuring its worth and value to Canada today? I pride myself on our membership in the British Commonwealth, as well as our historical ties to the United Kingdom and their monarchs. I believe many other Canadians feel the same, considering the rapturous welcome any royals receive on their not-infrequent visits to our country. In this time of ever-increasing globalization and homogenization, it is important to maintain our historical and cultural identity.
